The Final Chapter—Liberio is shutting down
Over the course of the past year and a half, we at Liberio have worked hard to democratize and flip the very traditional market of publishing on its head. We set out to build a platform that provided a full funnel for everyone to create and share their stories in the simplest way possible—from your average parent and scientist to the indie author. In this short span of time, we created a product people fell in love with, came back to and used to discover themselves and others through stories.
Although we succeeded in many ways, we also struggled and faced several obstacles as we continued to bootstrap. Some that unfortunately could not be weathered. Because of this and after incredibly long and difficult discussions, we’ve decided to cease operations and close down the platform.
Liberio became home to more than 30,000 authors that created over 12,000 eBooks, in 230 regions around the globe—from the largest cities in the United States and Europe to the smallest cities in Africa and Asia. And for that, we are humbled and grateful. As a team of 2, with your help, we've accomplished more and excelled further than most companies have the privilege to in such a short amount of time. But unfortunately, all good stories must come to an end.
As of today, it is no longer possible to create a new account on the platform. On Thursday, November 5, 2015, the Liberio platform will no longer be available. At that time, all accounts and data will be deleted forever. User information will not be archived, saved or shared. For the next month, our first priority is to ensure your writing is not affected in any way. As always, all of your eBooks are available for download/export in the ePub and mobi formats from your eBook’s edit view. We recommend you do so if it’s ready to be exported.
For those of you who purchased an eBook-to-go package, we will provide a full refund of $9 to the credit card you used upon purchase if you:
- Purchased and have yet to use it
- Purchased and embedded it into an eBook but did not publish
Don’t know if this is you? Send an email our way and we’ll get it sorted: firstname.lastname@example.org.
Why and What’s Next
To keep it simple, after taking a look at our plans for the platform, the priorities and what is needed of us as a company, we know one thing hasn't changed since the start—we couldn't do this on our own. The demand to keep up with the needs of the platform, along with what you deserve as an author of Liberio, is far more than we can accomplish as a bootstrapped team of two. For that, we are truly sorry.
We've always believed everyone, from all walks of life, should have the ability to share their story without limitations or at the will of a big corporation. We didn't want to be another company that received investment money or sold the technology to a company that would shut it down, close it off in a way that went against our core beliefs, or hindered you and your writing in any way. This was an option for us at one point that we happily turned down.
At some point in the future, we also want to open source all of our technology. With that, we know there is far more that can be built by others based off Liberio’s initial dreams, easier than ever, and we can’t wait to see that occur. That, along with our guidance to anyone who requests or needs it, is the best way we know to ensure Liberio’s story continues. For those interested in the open-sourced technology or working on a platform like Liberio, we’d love to provide you any help possible. If you’re interested in either, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at email@example.com and firstname.lastname@example.org.
Although this means the end of a chapter for us, we hope our insights and eventually, our technology, make it possible for someone else to finish the story. We cannot thank you enough for helping us write ours.
